What dryer vent cleaning actually is

Dryer vent cleaning removes lint from the full exhaust path: the hose behind the dryer, the duct inside the wall or ceiling, and the exit outside. Lint collects along that whole run, not just on the screen you empty. Once enough builds up, the dryer can’t push moist air out. Clothes stay damp and the heater runs hot.

A legitimate job goes end to end. The tech disconnects the dryer, runs a rotary brush through the duct, and vacuums out the loosened lint. The visit ends outside, where the flap gets checked and airflow confirmed. A job that stops at the hose behind the dryer is half a job.

What a proper dryer vent cleaning looks like

1. The dryer comes away from the wall and gets disconnected. If it never moves, the duct behind it never gets cleaned.
2. A rotary brush goes in at the dryer end, the exit end, or both, and works the full length. More bends mean more passes.
3. A vacuum runs the whole time. Loosened lint belongs in a bag or a shop vac, not on your floor.
4. Outside, the termination flap should swing open freely and close flat. Screens and bird guards get cleared.
5. With the dryer running, the tech confirms airflow at the exit. Put your hand there and feel it.
6. The dryer gets reconnected with a hose that isn’t crushed or kinked and runs once more before the tech leaves.

What it costs

Our 2025-2026 pricing research puts a standalone dryer vent cleaning at $75 to $340, average about $145, with most homeowners paying $100 to $185. The two biggest drivers are the run itself (length, bends, wall or roof exit) and how badly it’s blocked. Packed lint or a nest can push the job to $120 to $250 or more. As an add-on to air duct cleaning it’s often $100 to $150. One honest caveat: the lowest advertised prices usually buy the hose behind the dryer and nothing past the wall.

Do you actually need it?

The safety case here is real. The U.S. Fire Administration estimates about 2,900 home clothes dryer fires a year, and failure to clean is the leading cause [1]. A boring cause with a cheap fix.

You need it if clothes take two or more cycles to dry, the dryer is hot to the touch, you smell scorching while it runs, lint is hanging out of the exterior exit, or the vent has never been cleaned. Any one of those is enough. Request quotes from providers near you.

You can skip it, for now, if the vent was cleaned recently and clothes dry in one cycle. The cheaper first move is to wash the lint screen, since softener residue films over the mesh, and to check that the hose behind the dryer isn’t crushed. If drying times creep back up, or you notice heat or smell, come back and request quotes.

How to choose a provider

• Ask whether the job covers the full run to the exterior exit. If the answer is anything but yes, keep looking.
• Ask how they pull the lint out. Rotary brush plus vacuum is the standard; blowing alone moves lint without removing it.
• Look for CSIA’s Certified Dryer Exhaust Technician credential [2]. No law requires it, but it is specific to this exact job.
• Give your exit type (wall or roof) and rough run length up front, so the price on the day matches the one you were given.

Red flags: a price that only covers “the hose,” no trip outside to check the exit, no airflow check, and a claim that you need duct cleaning too before anyone has looked at them.
