Two jobs that share a word

A duct is a pipe, and two separate things go wrong with pipes. They get dirty inside, and they leak. Cleaning is for the first: a crew puts the system under suction and agitates the runs so the dust, hair, and construction debris inside get pulled out. Sealing is for the second: someone closes the joints, seams, and disconnected boots that let heated or cooled air escape into an attic or crawlspace. Neither job does the other’s work. They answer different complaints, get checked with different evidence, and the bills are not in the same class.

What points to cleaning

Cleaning evidence is stuff you can see: debris in the boot, a gray puff at the register, fine white dust in every room after a remodel because the returns ran uncovered through the drywall sanding. A smell that appears only while the blower is on counts too, but it should send you to a moisture check before a cleaning truck, since a musty duct is often a damp duct.

The EPA does not recommend cleaning on any schedule. Its position is to clean as needed, and the needs it names are visible mold, vermin, or heavy debris blowing into rooms. Missing from that list: uneven temperatures, high bills, a bedroom that never cools. Those complaints do not come from dirt inside a duct. What points to sealing

Sealing evidence is comfort and money: the bedroom at the end of the longest run that misses the thermostat setting in both seasons, bills that climb with no new habits, a hiss at a register where air squeezes through a gap that should not exist. The biggest one you can check by walking into your attic or crawlspace: ducts that run through unconditioned space.

A leak that stays inside the conditioned envelope wastes less, though it can still push air into cavities you never meant to pressurize. A leak in a hot attic dumps air you paid to cool straight outdoors, and a leaky return up there pulls hot, dusty air back in. Cleaning does not move that number. The proof each claim owes you

A cleaning claim is checked with eyes and a camera. Ask to see the inside of one supply run before the crew starts and the same run when they finish. If they cannot show you the inside, an uncheckable cleaning is a fee for a truck in your driveway.

A sealing claim is checked with a leakage test, and nothing else counts. A technician connects a calibrated fan to the ducts, pressurizes them, and reads how much air escapes, in cubic feet per minute at a set pressure. The number before sealing is the heart of the diagnosis. The number after is the receipt. A sealing pitch that arrives without a measured leakage number has not been diagnosed, no matter how bad the attic looks.

Sealing is also a favorite add-on during cheap cleaning visits, right alongside mold, and it runs the way the $49 duct cleaning scam guide describes: a technician “notices” leaks halfway through the job and has a price ready. The correct answer is an independent leakage test from someone who is not selling the sealing, and never a same-day yes. A leak that exists will show up on the meter. A leak that only exists in the pitch won’t.

Sometimes it is. A house with a remodel’s worth of drywall dust in the returns and a back bedroom that never cools may need both jobs. The way to find out is the same as for either alone: get the leakage number, get a look inside the ducts, and let each half stand on its own evidence. Bundling from one crew is fine when each half would have been worth buying separately. A bundle that only makes sense as a package was built around the part you did not need.

Order matters less than most crews will suggest. If sections have to come apart for repair, do that before the cleaning so the repair dust does not land in a duct you just paid to clean, and make sure the leakage test is run after the sealing as well as before.

Does duct cleaning improve airflow?
Only when removable debris is physically blocking the duct, like construction dust or matted buildup in a branch run. A collapsed or crushed duct is a repair, not a cleaning. And if a room is starved for air because the duct feeding it leaks or has come apart in the attic, cleaning changes nothing, since the air still escapes before it arrives. Weak airflow in one room is a reason to get eyes inside the duct and a leakage test before paying for either job.
Should I clean ducts before sealing them?
Only if the cleaning is justified on its own by visible debris. Sealing does not require a prior cleaning in most homes, and a crew that insists on selling both should be able to show separate evidence for each. If both are needed, ask the crew what order they use and why, and make sure the leakage test is repeated after the sealing.
